One Guest, Compounding
with Tom Alvarez and Michelle Rourke
Episode: 14

Tom Alvarez runs a boutique advisory firm and had a specific hypothesis when he came to Signal: that a small number of deeply relevant guest relationships would outperform a large volume of loosely-connected ones. He just didn't have the bandwidth to test it himself.
We built his show around that hypothesis directly. Rather than booking a new guest every week, we identified a shortlist of eight operators in his exact niche — private equity-backed manufacturing leadership — and focused on building real relationships with each one over multiple touchpoints, not just a single recording. Michelle Rourke, an operating partner at a mid-market PE firm, was the fourth guest in that shortlist.
The conversation with Michelle wasn't a one-off. It became the first of three interactions — a follow-up coffee, then a joint webinar Tom co-hosted with her firm four months later. That progression, guest to relationship to partnership, is exactly what Tom had hypothesized was possible, and it's now the model his entire show runs on.
Today, Tom's show has fewer episodes than most of his peers' shows, but a noticeably higher rate of guests turning into referral partners — proof that in this niche, depth outperforms volume.
